As part of our commitment to keeping children safe while traveling to and from school, we want to remind you about Kentucky’s school bus stopping laws and important safety procedures. Understanding these rules helps protect students when they are boarding or exiting the bus and ensures a safe environment for everyone on the road.
Red Lights + Stop Arm = Stop
* When a school bus extends its stop arm and flashes red lights, drivers/vehicles on the road must stop. (Please see the images for stopping requirements.)
* Vehicles should remain stopped until the bus retracts the arm and turns off the red lights.
Amber (Yellow) Lights = Prepare to Stop
* Yellow lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop. Drivers should slow down and prepare to stop.
Safety Reminders
* Children may cross the street unexpectedly.
* Never pass a stopped school bus, as it is both illegal and dangerous.
Legal Consequences
* Failing to stop for a school bus in Kentucky can result in fines, points on your driver’s license, and possible criminal penalties.

We are currently seeing an increase in fevers and sore throats among our elementary students. As we work together to keep our school community healthy, we would like to remind everyone about the importance of proper handwashing and covering our mouths when coughing or sneezing.
Good hand hygiene is one of the best ways to stop the spread of germs. Please encourage your child to:
Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating and after using the restroom.
Use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.
Avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth.
It is also very important that students:
Cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when they cough or sneeze.
Throw away used tissues right away.
If a tissue is not available, cough or sneeze into their elbow, not their hands.
If your child has a fever, sore throat, or is not feeling well, please keep them home and contact your healthcare provider as needed. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school.
Thank you for your support in helping us keep our students safe and healthy. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the school office.

Regardless of the outcome of tonight's game, Newport will again compete for the 9th Region crown beginning March 7, 2026, when Snapp & Co. will look to hoist the regional trophy and punch their tickets to the Sweet 16 state tournament. There's more to play for so stay tuned!

Happy School Resource Officer Appreciation Day!

Since their establishment, FRYSCs have become a cornerstone of Kentucky’s education system, grounded in the belief that when families are supported, students thrive. Here at Newport Independent School District, we are incredibly fortunate to have three coordinators who go above and beyond every day: Ms. Molly, Ms. Blackwell, and Ms. Watts. Thank you for being a constant source of care, connection, and support for our students and families.

This week, February 2nd–6th, we proudly celebrate National School Counselors Week. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our incredible school counselors for the vital role each of you play in supporting our students’ academic success and their social and emotional well-being. Through your guidance, compassion, and unwavering dedication, you help students navigate challenges, discover their strengths, and reach their full potential. Your encouragement, care, and commitment leave a lasting impact on our schools and our community. The Newport Independent School Community is deeply grateful for all that you do: every day, for every student.
