Newsletter to NHS Seniors from Dr. Orman Hat

Dr. Orman has detailed information about graduation and senior activities in the Senior Newsletter

Adopt a Senior Senior

In an effort to recognize our Seniors we have developed an "Adopt a Senior" Program.  Senior parents will upload pictures and information to the Facebook group, Newport HS Adopt a Senior.

The way it works- Look for student information on the Facebook page.  You can adopt more than one Senior.  You will be able to leave them a porch delivery, mail them cards or notes of encouragement, send small gifts ($25 Max), gift cards, etc. to help brighten their day.  We will run through May 31. The choice is yours. You can share your "adoptee" on Social Media to recognize them, buy them a special yard sign, etc.

Thanks for supporting our students.

Enrollment During Non-Traditional Instruction

Newport Independent School District

Enrollment During Non-Traditional Instruction

Any parent of guardian of an out of state student needing enrollment should follow the link to begin the process online. The Newport School enrolling that out of state student will work with the family to coordinate delivery of any applicable school work as we navigate through these Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) days. If the student is currently enrolled in another Kentucky Public School, that student should complete her or his NTI days with their current school district. Once regular classes resume we will enroll that student. Thank you for understanding that all Kentucky schools are currently, conducting NTI at this time.

Parents: Please submit a survey response for each child you have in our district by Monday, March 30. Let us know what is going well, what we can improve on, and anything we may have missed.

NTI Schedule Update April 20 Letter N

As we suspected, and as confirmed by today’s virtual meeting with Governor Beshear and all KY superintendents, schools will not be returning to in-person classes this school year, and we will be ending instruction on May 14th. The ending day corresponds when each school district reaches 1062 hours. Thus there are different ending dates for each school district.

I know you will all have many questions; please look for more information from your school principals in the days to come with end of year procedures, technology turn-in instructions and more.

As of now, Food Service will continue to provide uninterrupted meal service on the current schedule throughout the summer for any students 18 and under.  (Not just Newport Independent students) Please take advantage of this program to help feed your children and stretch your family budgets in this time of crisis. Each meal we serve increases the federal reimbursement our food service program receives. By participating you are helping the district as well as your family.

Due to the generous support of many Newport alumni, family, and friends, the scholarships listed in the attached document are made available exclusively to Newport High School seniors, and require only one application, essay and letter of recommendation to be considered for all of them. Scholarships may be used for second-term expenses at any college, technical or trade school.

The document attached includes instructions, a list of the local scholarships, an application with text fields, and a section to type the required essay. Students also must request a letter of recommendation from a Newport Independent Schools administrator, faculty or staff member. Good reference letters take time to write. Ask for the letter now!

Incomplete applications will NOT be accepted.

DUE: April 14, 2020

Students and parents: Check the Google Classroom Class of 2020 for this and other scholarship applications and requirements.

NHS NTI - One Call Parent Information Header N

Good afternoon, Wildcat families!

I hope you are all safe and well. Because of restrictions identified by the Governor for the safety of all of us, we have moved to Non-Traditional Instructional, or NTI, days in the district. Students and teachers will still be doing school, just differently than we have in the past.

This is new for all of us, so I thank you for your patience and flexibility. My staff and I are committed to communicating with our families consistently and often. I will give you a brief overview of what will happen in this message and a follow up email. If you would like to add an updated phone number or email address to receive communications, please call the NHS front office at (859)292-3023.

NEWPORT, Ky. - Tony Watts, the former principal of Newport High School who currently serves as a top administrator in the state's second largest school district, has been named superintendent of the Newport Independent Schools.

Watts, 49, will replace Newport's current superintendent Kelly Middleton, who is retiring at the end of the school year after eight years leading the district. The Newport Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Watts during a March 4 special board meeting. He will join the district in mid-April and will work with Middleton on the transition during the remainder of the school year.

“I am excited to be coming back, especially as superintendent,” said Watts, who was principal of Newport High School for four years. “I wanted the experience of working in a large district with a lot diversity to help me prepare to work as a superintendent, so this opportunity has panned out just as I had hoped”.

“I truly enjoyed my time at Newport,” he said. “We were able to make some changes and get things moving in the right direction. Mr. Middleton has done a great job. We have some things to work on, but we also have some great opportunities and I’m looking forward to get started and keeping things moving forward.”

                   Newport School of Innovation

NEWPORT - Recognizing that all students are not suited for a traditional classroom setting, Newport Independent Schools has launched an online learning program that is taking an innovative approach to engaging and serving an underserved student population. Classes will begin this Fall and there is an application process to be accepted into this program.

The Newport School of Innovation will serve students who want to take additional classes beyond what is typically being offered at our high school or when they are not traditionally offered as this can be a 24/7 schooling opportunity. Some students may want to take higher level courses while some may want to graduate in three rather than 4 years. The school of innovation may be of interest to students who are homeschooled or just do not fit into a traditional setting or have family/personal issues that prevent their regular attendance in a classroom during normal school hours.

Inclement Weather - Wind Chill

During the winter months several factors come into play that could delay the start of the school day or cause school to be closed altogether.  One such factor is the wind chill on a given day.  On particularly cold mornings we continuously monitor the National Weather Service and closely monitor the weather conditions.  There are two possible scenarios that come from the National Weather Service; a Wind Chill Advisory and a Wind Chill Warning.  The National Weather Service in Wilmington, OH defines the two as the following:

Wind Chill Advisory:  Wind chills between -10 and -24 degrees and at least a wind of 10 MPH or more
Wind Chill Warning:  Wind chills -25 degrees and below with at least a wind of 10 MPH or more

When the National Weather Service issues a Wind Chill Warning for Campbell County before the school day begins we will make a decision to close schools.  It is quite likely we will make this type of decision on the morning of the day in question as it is hard to predict what the wind chill will be the night before.  If there is a Wind Chill Advisory for the county, schools will likely be open unless there are operational problems with the bus fleet or mechanical problems in the school buildings.  Buildings and the bus fleet are assessed in the morning prior to school by 6:00 AM.

A Dream Fulfilled For John Forman John Forman 85 year old Graduate

It was during World War II, that John Forman had to quit school in order to help support his Newport family.  Education was very important to John - especially receiving a diploma from Newport Schools.  John went on to earn his GED diploma, but always felt that the war cheated him out of receiving his high school diploma.  At the age of 85 and in poor health, John reached out to Newport Schools to see if it was possible to receive his diploma.  On December 13, a group of teachers and one administrator traveled to Middletown, OH to honor John with his high school diploma. Click here to watch a video of John Forman's Graduation Ceremony.
