Remind App for Communication Coming Soon to Newport Ind. Schools!

Newport Independent Schools will be implementing Remind to enhance communication within our district. Remind will allow you to receive messages via the Remind app, the web, or via text message. It will not replace SchoolMessenger at this time, but will be used in conjunction with it, primarily to allow better communication between teachers and parents on a class level. Soon we will begin sending information to parents of our pilot school (Newport Intermediate) regarding Remind accounts and how to connect. Newport High School and Newport Primary School will follow.

IMPORTANT: Remind pulls information from Infinite Campus (IC). In order to be able to use and receive messages via Remind, you must have the following in place:

  1. Be marked as a guardian of an active student in IC.
  2. Have an active email address on file in IC.
  3. Have an active parent portal account in IC.

Please contact your student’s school counselor to verify or update any missing or incorrect information. Even if you do not wish to use Remind, these three items are vital in order for you to be an active part of your student’s academic journey through Newport Independent Schools.

Letter from the Superintendent - NTI DAYS

Hello Newport Family:

Due to the increase in the number of staff and students who are currently ill or currently quarantined we have decided to close school to in-person learning and make Friday, January 7 through Friday, January 14, 2022 NTI days.  We are out of school on Monday January 17, 2022 for MLK day.  We will resume in person learning on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.

Students are expected to complete the assignments given by their teachers during the NTI days.  The teachers should have explained the expectations to the students.  If you have questions, please contact your child’s school.

Meals will be offered for pickup Monday, 1/10 through Friday, 1/14 between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm at each school.  Orders must be placed by 9:00 am each day.  You can place your order by calling (859) 292-3038.  For more information, please visit our Food and Nutrition Services website.

We are still holding the scheduled vaccine clinics unless you hear otherwise.

Our number one priority is safety for our students and staff.  We feel this is the best course of action at this time.  Thanks in advance for your patience, understanding, and cooperation.  Have a great weekend.

Newport Independent Schools Newport School of Innovation Continues to Grow

New programs added to appeal to more students

The Newport School of Innovation - the mostly online program launched three years ago by the Newport Independent Schools district - continues to grow and attract new students into the district.

NSOI, as the school is known, has started the school year with 32 students, an increase of 10 students from last year. And with some new opportunities for students to enroll that have been approved by the district's administration and the Newport Board of Education, Newport Innovation Coordinator Josh Snapp expects additional enrollment throughout the school year.

Important: Classes Cancelled for Friday, September 16. NTI days on September 20-21

Due to the increase in the number of students we have who are currently ill or currently quarantined we have decided to cancel school tomorrow, Friday, September 17.

On Monday, September 20 and Tuesday, September 21 we will utilize Non-Traditional Instruction (NT) days. We won’t have in-person instruction, but the students will be expected to complete the assignments given by their teachers. The teachers should have explained the expectations to the students. If you have questions, please contact your child’s school.

We plan to come back to school on Wednesday, September 22. We are asking that you continue to keep your child home and contact the school if your child is sick or has come in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID.

Meals won’t be provided tomorrow, but will be provided for those students who need it on NTI days, starting Monday. We ask that you contact the food service department. The instructions can be found on the district website or you can call (859) 292-3038.

Our number one priority is safety for our students and staff. We feel this is the best course of action at this time. Thanks in advance for your patience, understanding, and cooperation. Have a great weekend.

Newport Independent Seeks Feedback

Feedback

All of us with the Newport Independent Schools are grieving over the horrible loss of life that happened Monday during a tragic automobile accident in Virginia. Victor Meyers, Mary Snow and Joseph Snow were students at Newport. We also mourn the loss of Anthony Snow, who was the father of two of the children. Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones and friends of the family.

The sudden loss of life is always a tragedy, but the pain is deeper when young children are suddenly taken from us. Grief counselors will be available the rest of the week from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Newport Intermediate School. We ask everyone to remember this family in their prayers.

Newport High School Seeking Varsity Football Coach

Newport High School's varsity football team, a program on the rise that is posting winning seasons and attracting players, is seeking a new head coach.

Former coach Joseph Wynn has resigned after leading the team to three straight winning seasons.

Just five years ago, less than 25 players were on the team's roster. But participation has grown over the past few seasons as the team has posted winning seasons.

"Newport will also return a large senior class for a 2A school," said Newport High School Athletic Director Alan Haire II. "Football participation has also grown over the past three years and the team is expected to field a roster of over 40 players. We are excited for the students in this program and can't wait to start the season."

Those interested in coaching Newport's varsity football team can contact AD Haire at 859-292-3023 or robert.haire@newport.kyschools.us.

Newport High School Launching Esports Teams Program

Students showing interest in growing sport, activity

Newport High School is launching an Esports program that will include competitive teams and utilizing gaming as an educational tool while providing a new student activity.

Newport is the latest Northern Kentucky high school to embrace Esports, which allows schools to compete against one another and offers an opportunity for college scholarship funds.

"These are not the video games that my generation grew up playing," said Newport Independent Schools Superintendent Tony Watts said. "This is a big business, and these games are, as anybody knows who plays them, very high tech and sophisticated. Beyond forming a team, Esports will give some students an opportunity to participate in something other than sports."

At its most recent meeting, the Newport Board of Education voted to approve the high school's Esports program.

Letter from the Superintendent - January 14 to be an all virtual day.

Dear Newport Family

Jan 14, 2021

Tomorrow will be an all-virtual instructional day for the district for precautionary measures. Unfortunately, we had 6 students get ill at the Primary school today. We don’t know if the students have COVID, but we encouraged those parents to get the students tested. You will be contacted if your student had direct contact with any of these students. Safety is our number one priority, and we feel this is our best course of action at this time.

Monday is a holiday and there is no school. We will make a decision about our instructional model going forward once we get more information about these students. I will let you know our plan by the end of the day Monday.

Our School Based Health Clinic is open and available if you need them. I encourage you to see our nurse if you or your student isn’t feeling well. I encourage you to keep your student home if they are not feeling well or if they have a fever. When a student comes to school sick, it affects the entire district. One person can cause the entire school to have to shut down because of the contacts they might have. Please help us out.

Thanks for your cooperation, patience and understanding through this difficult and stressful time. Have a great evening.

Sincerely,

Tony Watts

Holiday Message from the Board of Education

Letter from the Superintendent - Hybrid Learning to Resume on January 11. District Logo

Message from the Superintendent,

Silver bells, silver bells, it’s Christmas time in the city.  Ring-a-ling, hear them ring.  Soon it will be Christmas Day.  City sidewalks, busy sidewalks, dressed in holiday style.  In the air there’s a feeling of Christmas.  Children laughing, people passing, meeting smile after smile.  And on every street corner you hear.  Silver Bells.

We have made it through the 1st semester.  I can’t thank you enough for your understanding, support, and dedication to our students and our district.  You have been flexible and have adapted to all the changes that have been thrown at us.  Things haven’t gone the way we wanted or expected, but you have been the best group of parents I could ever have wished for.  I am so proud to say that I am your superintendent.

Good news!  We will go back to our hybrid learning plan starting January 11, 2021.  Students who chose virtual, will still be all virtual.  We will follow our Monday/Tuesday, Thursday/Friday schedule with Wednesday being all virtual and deep cleaning.  We will still be following the healthy at school guidance.  Everyone will still be required to wear mask; we will still practice social distancing; we will still take temperatures when we enter the building; and we will still be required to sanitize and wash hands regularly.  We will still encourage parents to keep students home if they have a fever or are not feeling well that day.  If you have any questions about your child’s schedule please contact your school.

Letter from the Superintendent - Return to All Virtual Instruction Newport Ind. Schools

Dear Newport Family

This is your superintendent.  As you know, because of the number of COVID cases in our county we have been designated a red county.  When a county reaches the red status, the governor recommends that: Employees work from home when possible; reduce in-person shopping; reschedule or postpone public and private events; do not host or attend gatherings of any size.  Due to our red status, the number of positive cases we have had, the number of students and staff we have on quarantine, and the governor’s recommendation, we have decided to go back to all virtual instruction beginning Thursday, November 5th.  We feel this is the safest and best course of action for us at this time.  The plan is to continue all virtual instruction until the Monday after Thanksgiving, November 30th.  We will review our county status the week before Thanksgiving and let you know if the plan changes.

We will still be providing meal service for our students.  Please check the district website, on Wednesday for delivery times and locations.  If you have additional questions about meal delivery, call the district food service director’s office.

If you have questions about your student’s schedule or anything school-related, please call the school.  If they don’t answer immediately, please leave a message and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks for your patience and understanding through this difficult and stressful time.  We will get through this together.  Have a great evening.

Sincerely,

How Does The Wind Chill Affect School Being Delayed or Closed?

During the winter months several factors come into play that could delay the start of the school day or cause school to be closed altogether.  One such factor is the wind chill on a given day.  On particularly cold mornings we continuously monitor the National Weather Service and closely monitor the weather conditions. STATEMENT FROM NEWPORT INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT TONY WATTS ON COVID-19-RELATED SCHOOL REOPENING

In a call yesterday (Aug. 10), Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear made a recommendation to all public school superintendents to delay opening schools to in-person instruction until or after the week of Sept. 28 due to the high number of Kentuckians testing positive for COVID-19, especially among children.

The governor based his recommendation on four factors:

  1. A high level of total COVID cases and a high positive test rate
  2. An increase in the number of infections among children, both in Kentucky and the nation
  3. Outbreaks already occurring in states that have attempted reopening schools
  4. Families still going on vacations in COVID hotspots, then returning to Kentucky.

Based on Gov. Beshear’s recommendation, unfortunately, we will not begin school with in person instruction. All students will begin school on Aug. 31 doing virtual instruction. We will provide updates on changes as they occur. We thank our students, parents, families, teachers and staff for their patience and understanding through these trying times.

NTI Schedule Update April 20 Letter N

As we suspected, and as confirmed by today’s virtual meeting with Governor Beshear and all KY superintendents, schools will not be returning to in-person classes this school year, and we will be ending instruction on May 14th. The ending day corresponds when each school district reaches 1062 hours. Thus there are different ending dates for each school district.

I know you will all have many questions; please look for more information from your school principals in the days to come with end of year procedures, technology turn-in instructions and more.

As of now, Food Service will continue to provide uninterrupted meal service on the current schedule throughout the summer for any students 18 and under.  (Not just Newport Independent students) Please take advantage of this program to help feed your children and stretch your family budgets in this time of crisis. Each meal we serve increases the federal reimbursement our food service program receives. By participating you are helping the district as well as your family.

Coronavirus Resource Letter to Newport Families and Community Corona Virus

Dear Newport Families and Community:

There is nationwide concern regarding the outbreak of the coronavirus (CO-VID-19). Please know that we share these same concerns and are taking precautionary measures to protect students and staff the best we can.

All schools deal with outbreaks of illness on a regular basis, and even though the coronavirus is new, the same procedures we use during flu outbreaks can be of use during this time also.

Health officials encourage everyone to stay informed and to follow the best practice guidelines for staying healthy:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before eating and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing, and especially after going to the bathroom. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand-sanitizers.

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

  •  Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

  • Stay home when you are sick.

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

TONY WATTS NAMED SUPERINTENDENT OF NEWPORT INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS Newport Schools

NEWPORT, Ky. - Tony Watts, the former principal of Newport High School who currently serves as a top administrator in the state's second largest school district, has been named superintendent of the Newport Independent Schools.

Watts, 49, will replace Newport's current superintendent Kelly Middleton, who is retiring at the end of the school year after eight years leading the district. The Newport Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Watts during a March 4 special board meeting. He will join the district in mid-April and will work with Middleton on the transition during the remainder of the school year.

“I am excited to be coming back, especially as superintendent,” said Watts, who was principal of Newport High School for four years. “I wanted the experience of working in a large district with a lot diversity to help me prepare to work as a superintendent, so this opportunity has panned out just as I had hoped”.

“I truly enjoyed my time at Newport,” he said. “We were able to make some changes and get things moving in the right direction. Mr. Middleton has done a great job. We have some things to work on, but we also have some great opportunities and I’m looking forward to get started and keeping things moving forward.”

It’s my hope that the people in our community will take a few moments this month to thank them and to learn more about the work of our school board members who bear the tremendous responsibility of ensuring the long-term success of our school system – and of our community’s children.

NEWPORT BOARD OF EDUCATION DENIES CHARTER SCHOOL APPLICATION NEWPORT School of Innovation

NEWPORT – Following the recommendation of an esteemed panel of 32 Kentucky public school educators, administrators and experts, the Newport Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday night to deny the application for a charter school that was proposed for the district.

The vote to deny the 1,062-page charter school application by the River Cities Academy followed a rigorous vetting by a review committee that included representatives of public school districts in Northern Kentucky, Northern Kentucky University, the Northern Kentucky Cooperative for Educational Services and others that brought more than 700 years of experience to the process, said Newport Independent Schools Superintendent Kelly Middleton.

“The applicant lacked specificity and provided unfinished planning in multiple areas that leave significant question as to whether or not the school will be able to launch successfully for a proposed August 2020 start date,” Superintendent Middleton told the Board of Education as he listed a number of major concerns expressed by the review committee. “The applicant does not provide data to support the complexities of the population to be served and relies on generalized notions of what the applicant believes should be good for all children.”
