Newport Independent Schools Celebrate Bus Driver Appreciation Day

When you count extra co-curricular trips and daily routes, our bus drivers transport Newport Independent students over 10,000 miles each year. School buses remain the safest way to transport students and our drivers and monitors deserve recognition for their performance in an important and sometimes difficult job. As superintendent, I have been a passenger on every bus route and I have seen all the narrow passages our busses must negotiate by being in an urban school district. Sometimes inches separate car mirrors and bus mirrors! Upon arriving in Newport I was a little surprised by the hills on the South end of Newport that sometimes cause us to have to call off school. Again, I would like to thank our drivers for their excellent driving record, their great customer service and the relationship each driver and monitor have with their students.  The school bus driving profession is one of the jobs where all your troubles are behind you!

State Audits Confirm Newport Schools' Progress School Bus

Diagnostic Audits performed by the Kentucky Department of Education show that the Newport Independent Schools are on a path to making key improvements at each of its three school buildings.

"By their very nature, audits are designed to show a school district what it is doing well and what it can do better," said Newport Independent Schools Superintendent Kelly Middleton. "By that measure, we are largely pleased with what the audits show. We have issues that we are already addressing and making progress on. There is always room for improvement, and we are focused on making positive changes that will positively impact our students, teachers, administrators and staff."

The way it works- Look for student information on the Facebook page.  You can adopt more than one Senior.  You will be able to leave them a porch delivery, mail them cards or notes of encouragement, send small gifts ($25 Max), gift cards, etc. to help brighten their day.  We will run through May 31. The choice is yours. You can share your "adoptee" on Social Media to recognize them, buy them a special yard sign, etc.

Thanks for supporting our students.

It’s my hope that the people in our community will take a few moments this month to thank them and to learn more about the work of our school board members who bear the tremendous responsibility of ensuring the long-term success of our school system – and of our community’s children.

                   Newport School of Innovation

NEWPORT - Recognizing that all students are not suited for a traditional classroom setting, Newport Independent Schools has launched an online learning program that is taking an innovative approach to engaging and serving an underserved student population. Classes will begin this Fall and there is an application process to be accepted into this program.

The Newport School of Innovation will serve students who want to take additional classes beyond what is typically being offered at our high school or when they are not traditionally offered as this can be a 24/7 schooling opportunity. Some students may want to take higher level courses while some may want to graduate in three rather than 4 years. The school of innovation may be of interest to students who are homeschooled or just do not fit into a traditional setting or have family/personal issues that prevent their regular attendance in a classroom during normal school hours.

Wildcat Wrap-up

NEWPORT – Following the recommendation of an esteemed panel of 32 Kentucky public school educators, administrators and experts, the Newport Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday night to deny the application for a charter school that was proposed for the district.

The vote to deny the 1,062-page charter school application by the River Cities Academy followed a rigorous vetting by a review committee that included representatives of public school districts in Northern Kentucky, Northern Kentucky University, the Northern Kentucky Cooperative for Educational Services and others that brought more than 700 years of experience to the process, said Newport Independent Schools Superintendent Kelly Middleton.

“The applicant lacked specificity and provided unfinished planning in multiple areas that leave significant question as to whether or not the school will be able to launch successfully for a proposed August 2020 start date,” Superintendent Middleton told the Board of Education as he listed a number of major concerns expressed by the review committee. “The applicant does not provide data to support the complexities of the population to be served and relies on generalized notions of what the applicant believes should be good for all children.”

Applicant Screening Committee: CAST YOUR VOTE

TO: Parents of Newport Independent Schools

The Newport Board of Education is conducting a search for a new superintendent. KRS 160.352 requires that the Board form an applicant screening committee. One of the members of that committee must be a parent.

Nominations have been received for the parent rep and the final vote will take place on Wednesday, December 11, 2019. Four parents have been nominated:

Rose Curtin
John Hayden
Dr. Alexis Miller
Kim Mullins-Ward

Voting will take place in all schools and at the Welcome Center. Please feel free to stop at one of our locations and cast your vote. The front office staff will have the ballots; please bring your ID with you. You must be a parent/guardian of a current student to vote.

Please call Kim Klosterman at 859-292-3004 if you have questions.

Staff, Students, and Parents/Guardians:

The Superintendent and his staff will evaluate weather and road conditions prior to 5:00 a.m. All staff & student homes will receive an alert via the School Messenger Alert System, as well as a message posted on our web home page at www.newportwildcats.org if there is a delay in the start of the school day or if the district is closing.

Newport Independent wins KSBA 2018 Spring PEAK Award PEAK Award

Newport Independent Schools Superintendent Kelly Middleton said his district believes relationships trump everything. To enhance the relationships between teachers and their students and parents, Newport began its Home Visit Program in 2012.

All 2,000 Newport students receive a visit from their teacher prior to the new school year. All staff also participate. The program has helped the district build relationships and connections among the community, and has resulted in an increase in parent/guardian and community involvement, and fewer discipline referrals for students. The efforts have also earned the district KSBA’s Public Education Achieves in Kentucky (PEAK) Award.

Parent Support Group PSG
"Courage is asking for for what you need"
 -Brene Brown
For the past 6 months or so that is what these groups aspired to do... Have Courage! They showed up, suited up, and opened their hearts and minds to this journey we call..."parenting".  This wonderful group of individuals practiced courage by showing up, letting themselves be seen and honoring vulnerability. They shared their stories of struggles and strength.  They shared laughter, tears, and of course fears. They practiced compassion, set boundaries, they worked hard, had hope, and perseverance. Their children were witnesses to their growth and that is immeasurable. Their hearts are filled with beauty, friendship, and love! Together they grew as one! No longer treading this journey of parenting alone! Congratulations on these achievements and all your efforts bridging School to Community!
NIS Ranks TOP TEN in Energy Efficiency energy
Newport Independent Schools have entered the top ten on the energy saving chart for the state of Kentucky. Since the begining on 2008 when KSBA introduced it new SEMP (School Energy Managment Project) District Energy Manager Grady Brown has been hard at work making sure we as a Distrisct were doing all we could to cut back on cost. Here at NIS we know that saving energy means saving money for educating our kids!

Saving $170 million is no small feat, but that is what Kentucky school districts have done by reducing energy demand and consumption.

It has been said many times that “What gets measured, gets done.” With facility costs nearly doubling between 2000 and 2008, state leaders directed all districts to begin measuring and managing energy resources. While a few districts initiated local programs, this directive was the impetus for KSBA to begin a statewide program to support district efforts.

Governor's Scholarship Winner Student Winner

Jalyn Collier (pictured) was introduced to the board as the winner of a Governor's Scholarship, a four-year full ride to college. Jalyn has a 3.92 GPA, and has a class ranking of 6 out of 96. She is involved in archery, academic team, STLP, the yearbook, and church activities. Jalyn has not decided which college she wants to attend, but she has narrowed it down to Georgetown or Bellermine.

Finances Tight for 2017 -18 School Year

River City News LogoSuperintendent Kelly Middleton expressed concern about State and Federal education issues during the April Newport Board of Education meeting.  "I have to say, this is the most dismal financial climate," Kelly Middleton said. "It is the worst I have seen in my 30 years in schools.  We have seen cuts, and ours is one of the worst in the area. We have had a loss of students. Our financial director, Tete Turner, has reported that our SEEK shortfall will be about $500,000. These are tough times for public schools."  Click here to read more about this and student presentations.

Good News Concerning the Nickel Tax Increase

"On behalf of the entire Newport Independent School District, The Newport Board of Education is thankful for the effectiveness of the legislative process, the time and effort put forth by Campbell County Clerk Jim Luersen and staff, and the Newport voters for not signing the shortsighted petition.  The Board of Education will now be able to utilize valuable state dollars to improve our existing facilities. The board and the district will continue the important work of educating our children, serving our community, and maintaining good stewardship of the public's tax dollars."    ~ Kelly Middleton, Superintendent

Coronavirus Resource Letter to Newport Families and Community Corona Virus

Dear Newport Families and Community:

There is nationwide concern regarding the outbreak of the coronavirus (CO-VID-19). Please know that we share these same concerns and are taking precautionary measures to protect students and staff the best we can.

All schools deal with outbreaks of illness on a regular basis, and even though the coronavirus is new, the same procedures we use during flu outbreaks can be of use during this time also.

Health officials encourage everyone to stay informed and to follow the best practice guidelines for staying healthy:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before eating and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing, and especially after going to the bathroom. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand-sanitizers.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  •  Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

NEWPORT, Ky. - Tony Watts, the former principal of Newport High School who currently serves as a top administrator in the state's second largest school district, has been named superintendent of the Newport Independent Schools.

Watts, 49, will replace Newport's current superintendent Kelly Middleton, who is retiring at the end of the school year after eight years leading the district. The Newport Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Watts during a March 4 special board meeting. He will join the district in mid-April and will work with Middleton on the transition during the remainder of the school year.

“I am excited to be coming back, especially as superintendent,” said Watts, who was principal of Newport High School for four years. “I wanted the experience of working in a large district with a lot diversity to help me prepare to work as a superintendent, so this opportunity has panned out just as I had hoped”.

“I truly enjoyed my time at Newport,” he said. “We were able to make some changes and get things moving in the right direction. Mr. Middleton has done a great job. We have some things to work on, but we also have some great opportunities and I’m looking forward to get started and keeping things moving forward.”

Inclement Weather - Wind Chill

During the winter months several factors come into play that could delay the start of the school day or cause school to be closed altogether.  One such factor is the wind chill on a given day.  On particularly cold mornings we continuously monitor the National Weather Service and closely monitor the weather conditions.  There are two possible scenarios that come from the National Weather Service; a Wind Chill Advisory and a Wind Chill Warning.  The National Weather Service in Wilmington, OH defines the two as the following:

Wind Chill Advisory:  Wind chills between -10 and -24 degrees and at least a wind of 10 MPH or more
Wind Chill Warning:  Wind chills -25 degrees and below with at least a wind of 10 MPH or more

When the National Weather Service issues a Wind Chill Warning for Campbell County before the school day begins we will make a decision to close schools.  It is quite likely we will make this type of decision on the morning of the day in question as it is hard to predict what the wind chill will be the night before.  If there is a Wind Chill Advisory for the county, schools will likely be open unless there are operational problems with the bus fleet or mechanical problems in the school buildings.  Buildings and the bus fleet are assessed in the morning prior to school by 6:00 AM.

Rain Barrel Project on Display at the Cincinnati Zoo

Rain BarrelA group of Intermediate School students worked on a project over the past couple of months creating, designing, and painting a rain barrel as part of the Rain Barrel Art Project organized by Save Local Waters.  The rain barrel is on display at the Cincinnati Zoo until April 20th.

Their rain barrel, titled "Wilderness Daydream", is a playful depiction of wildlife which celebrates biodiversity on our planet. Our inspiration comes from the wildlife artists Charley Harper, with his geometric representations of nature, and Henri Rousseau, depicting playful and densely layered scenery of jungle plants and animals.  The depictions of plants and animals are nearly entirely from the kids’ designs. This has been an amazing project to give the kids a sense of purpose in making contributions to both a local and worldwide issue.

Nickel Tax Facts

Dear Newport Parents:                             DO NOT SIGN!
As many of you already know, on January 11th, the Board of Education approved an additional five cents equivalent tax rate on real and personal property.  As required by the General Assembly, a hearing was advertised in the KY Enquirer on December 28, 2016 and again on January 4, 2017 to hear public comments regarding the proposed levy. The state rewards school districts for taking this nickel by equalizing (giving us state funds); thus, school districts who do not take the second nickel are leaving money for schools and students "on the table."   Presently, over 100 school districts take this second nickel. This tax will not go into effect until the 2017-2018 tax year.  However, it is a recallable tax which, simply put, means residents of the city may file a petition with the county clerk’s office to have this tax levy added to the ballot in an election if they receive enough signatures against the increase.  It has come to our attention that such a petition has been filed by a short-sighted group of Newport residents who are clearly not acting in the best interests of our students, teachers, staff and community.  Basically, if our opponents are successful with their petition drive, the board will then be left with no other option than to take the 4% tax increase next fall.

A Dream Fulfilled for John Forman

It was during World War II, that John Forman had to quit school in order to help support his Newport family.  Education was very important to John - especially receiving a diploma from Newport Schools.  John went on to earn his GED diploma, but always felt that the war cheated him out of receiving his high school diploma.  At the age of 85 and in poor health, John reached out to Newport Schools to see if it was possible to receive his diploma.  On December 13, a group of teachers and one administrator traveled to Middletown, OH to honor John with his high school diploma. Click here to watch a video of John Forman's Graduation Ceremony.
