Julie Smith-Morrow grew up in Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin, lived in Puerto Rico and raised her children in Arizona and Texas. She moved to Newport with her husband, John, over 13 years ago and fell in love with the friendly people, community spirit and vibrant neighborhoods of her new hometown.
Julie is a graduate of Brookfield Central, which is a public high school in Brookfield, Wisconsin. She earned a B.S. in Agronomy; Crop Science; and a Ph.D. in Plant Genetics from Texas Tech University. Julie is the mother of three sons, living in Texas and South Carolina, and all her children attended and graduated from public schools. She served for over 20 years in leadership positions with Goodwill Industries in Lubbock, Texas; the Freestore Foodbank; and Dress for Success in Cincinnati. Julie is currently a student with the National Institute for Genealogical Studies, and is working to earn her educational certificate and planning to become a board certified genealogist and offer services locally.
Julie has a deep seated and personal commitment to women, children and families. She is very passionate about helping people put food on their tables, send their children to good schools, and become economically independent. Ms. Smith-Morrow has served as a member of the Newport Board of Education since 2007, currently as the Board’s Vice Chair; and as a member of the Gateway Community and Technical College Board of Directors since 2014. Her commitment to education is driven by a belief that education is the true key to success.
