History of Newport Athletics

Athletic History

Newport Independent Schools hold a rich tradition in athletics dating back to the early 1900’s.  Through the ever changing face of the city, Newport has continued success on the fields and courts from its early beginning through today.

Volleyball has been a part of Newport athletics since the early 1970’s.

Softball has been a mainstay at Newport since the 1970’s.  The team continuously competes for Conference titles.

Wrestling was a long time sport in Newport throughout the 1970’s.  The program was dropped in the 1980’s but resumed in 2005.  Since its resurrection the wrestling program has had several Middle School State Champions and even more high school State Qualifiers.

Baseball has a rich tradition in Newport from the days of legendary coach Blue Foster to the more recent days of Ray and Grady Brown.  Newport owns many Conference and Regional Championships in baseball and has earned two KHSAA State Championships in 1940 and 1941.

There is no activity in Newport that envelopes as much pride as cheerleading.  Newport has always had great cheerleaders and recently placed 2nd in the state in cheer competition.

Year in and year out track proves to be one of Newport’s most successful programs.  Newport has had many individual State Champions and earned the 1941 Boys Track State Championship and the 1982 Girls Track State Championship.                   

On Friday nights, Football Fever spreads throughout the community.  Newport has continuously held one of the most prominent football programs in Northern Kentucky.   In our 107 years of football Newport has earned 3 Mythical State Championships and many Conference, District and Regional Championships.

In this city there is no doubt which sport has historically been king – basketball.  Newport High School has collected the second most Regional Championships in Northern Kentucky history – 12.  From the days of Coach Foster through the icon Stan Arnzen to the Cinderella 2010 team of Aric Russell, basketball has been played at high levels in Newport.
