Freshman Nekko Beal was recently awarded first place in the "Convene for the Dream" writing contest sponsored by the Northern Kentucky Ministers Alliance. Nekko wrote a poem which won first place in the level 3 division (7-9th grade) out of 50 entries. She was presented with the award on Martin Luther King Day, at the Carnegie Hall in Covington, Ky.

NIS CHEERLEADERS ROCK THE HOUSE!

Youth Cheer Night, at the Stan Arnzen Sports Complex, brought new life to the old house. Thirty-six of Newport Intermediate’s most spirited girls took the floor at half time, and left the stands reverberating, as the Wildcat Boys went on to sweep Dayton in Freshman, JV and Varsity.

RACHEL'S CHALLENGE - STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Sarah L. Stafford is a 6th grader at Newport Middle School and has been busy in many Friends of Rachel activities. She is an active member of the Anti-Bullying Club and wants students to realize that name calling really hurts. Sarah volunteers every Tuesday after school at the Bright Days Child Care Center and is sad when it is time to leave her favorite classroom - The Toddler Room. She says "one more hug" and assures the children that she will be back. Sarah just started the Knitting Club and is quickly learning how to knit a scarf for a homeless child in Northern Kentucky through the charitable organization "Scarf it Up". Sarah is an amazing, kind girl and on top of all that she is carrying a 3.75 grade point average.

Every month we honor one or more students from our district who are involved in a Rachel's Challenge club, also known as, Friends of Rachel (FOR). For more information about Rachel's Challenge, please visit www.rachelschallenge.org.

CHEERLEADERS GOING ON TO STATE COMPETITION!

FREE HEALTH SERVICES AVAILABLE

Newport Schools is committed to the well-being of our students. Our Nurse Practitioner is on hand every Thursday at the Newport Middle School from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., to give regular physicals; sports physicals; and immunizations. This is a free service to every enrolled student from preschool through high school. These services are by appointment only and some restrictions apply. DISTRICT WIDE SHAKEOUT DRILL

This year the entire Newport Independent School District will be one of many districts in Kentucky participating in the Great Central United States ShakeOut Drill. On February 7, 2012, at 10:15 a.m., Central Standard Time (11:15 a.m. for us in the Eastern Standard Time Zone), all Newport schools will participate in this event by holding our “Drop, Cover and Hold Drills” for all of our students and staff.
