2014 - 2015 Yearbooks on Sale

The 2014-15 Yearbooks are now on sale.  Please order your year book by visiting www.jostens.com or by picking up an order form at Newport High School.  The NHS yearbook is full-color, contains 150 pages of memories and starts at $60.00.  Don’t let your student be left out!  No additional books will be ordered.  The deadline for ordering is May 11, 2015.

Girls on the Run

The NIS Girls on the Run team is gearing up for their 5K race on Saturday, May 9th at the Paul Brown Stadium.  If you are interested in joining our team as a Running Buddy, please call Ms. Pierce at NIS or you can register at www.gotrcincinnati.org.  Our girls are ready to Run Like Wildcats!

Officer Larry Long has accepted a new position as Supervisor of the Criminal Investigation Division and has resigned as the SRO for Newport Schools.  Thank you Officer Long for your four years of service!

Gary Adams Receives Service Award

Gary Adams received a service award from Debrah Kidd, KMEA president at the February 2015 state convention. Gary is the longest serving (45 years); active public school music teacher in the state!  Congratulations Mr. Adams!

Big Brothers/Big Sisters help out NIS

Big Brother, Austin Knight, took time out of his day(s) to raise enough money to buy 19 basketballs for NIS.  Along with raising the money, Dick's Sporting Goods gave an additional 20% off each ball to help.  We would like to say Thank You to Austin and the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

The Skills USA Regional Competition was held Saturday at Holmes High School.  All eight students placed 3rd place and above!  All students receiving 1st or 2nd place will be competing at the state competition in April.

FBLA Regional Competition

Twenty-one students from Newport High competed at the FBLA Region 4 Competition on March 10th. Six students have advanced to compete in the State Competition on April 20 - 22. Ethan Snapp is also the new Region 4 Parliamentarian. It is a wonderful position to hold and a huge accomplishment!

4-H Visits Newport Intermediate

In collaboration with 4H, NIS presented the Dollars & Sense Program.  Through this 4H program, students learn how to be financially responsible by utilizing money management and saving techniques.

New Marquee Coming to Newport High School

Two members of the High School Boosters Association, Tom and Lori Murray, came to the January 28th Board meeting to present the board with a check for $7,500.  This money will be used to help build a new electronic marquee to replace the old one in front of the high school.  Click here to see more River City News about the January board meeting.

Hoeh and Combs to compete at State Singles Bowling Tournament

Congratulations to 8th Grader Mirena Combs, who finished in 4th place and Senior Katlyn Hoeh, who finished in 3rd place at the Regional Singles Bowling Tournament.  Mirena and Katlyn will compete at the State Singles Bowling Tournament in Lexington on February 12, 2015.  Click here to read more about Mirena, Katlyn, and the tournament.


Athletics Open Forum

There will be a "Town Hall" open forum meeting, in accordance with the Athletic Department's Title IX audit, on Thursday, February 12th from 3:00 - 3:30 in the Newport High School library.  All parents, community members, and staff are encouraged to attend and participate in the question and answer session.  The session will be conducted by KHSAA Title IX auditor, Gary Lawson, and NHS Athletic Director, Matt Schmitz.

NHS FBLA Students become Big Brothers & Big Sisters

FBLA has partnered with the Intermediate School to jump start a Big Brother Big Sister program. They will be meeting once a month and altering activities each month. For January, they shared some pizza, got to know each other, and went outside for a kickball and basketball game!  Next month, they will be focusing on reading and homework.

Wrestling Team Gets 2nd Place

Congratulations to the Newport Wrestling team on getting 2nd place out of 24 teams at the Capital City Classic tournament on Saturday, January 24th in Frankfort.  Their hard work is definitely showing and paying off.  We are proud of Coach Mosley, his coaching staff, and most importantly the wrestlers!  Go Wildcats!

Outdoor Adventure Club Going on a North Slope Trip

The Outdoor Adventure Club will be skiing and snowboarding at Perfect North Slopes this Saturday, February 7th. This outing will be free of charge to middle and high school students and includes transportation, a lift ticket, equipment rentals and lunch. Space is limited and spots will be given on a first come first serve basis.

Winter Game Changer Night a Success at NIS

The Winter Game Changer night was a huge success with over 170 students and parents attending! Grace Fellowship Church provided dinner and wonderful volunteers to serve the food! We are truly thankful for everyone's attendance and all the support we receive from the community.

State Dual Championship - Wrestling

The Varsity Wrestling team placed 2nd in the District to qualify for the Small School State Duals Championship.  Only 12 schools across the state qualify for this tournament.  This is the first time Newport Wrestling has ever qualified for the State Duals Championship.  The State Duals Championship will be held at Union County High School on January 31, 2015.  Go Wildcats!

Newport Middle School Has New Mailing Address

Effective January 1, 2015, Newport Middle School’s street address officially changed to 95 West 9th Street. The Welcome Center is still using 30 West 8th Street.

Middle School Band Concert

The Newport Middle School Bands will present a Winter Concert on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. Featured performances by the 6th grade beginning band and the combined 7th & 8th grade bands. The concert will be held at 7:00 PM in the Middle School gymnasium. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Kids Helping Kids

NIS students and staff assist in delivering toys and presents to the Family Resource Center. Items were donated by a non-profit organization called Faces without Places. This organization provides educational services to children experiencing homelessness. NIS is "Raising the Bar" on service learning!

Newport Schools Receive Donation from Masonic Lodge

Mr. Middleton received a donation of $500 from the Masonic Lodge #163, F. & A.M. located in Newport, KY.  Mr. Jerry Sebastian, a former Principal of A.D. Owens Elementary and Newport District Finance Officer presented the check to Superintendent Middleton.

Round 3 of the playoffs was another cold and bitter night, but that didn't keep the Wildcat fans from roaring their support for our Varsity Team! Not only did our Wildcats make us proud, but our band and cheerleaders also braved the cold and performed very well! Thank you Coach Schmitz for leading our Wildcats into the playoffs!

STLP Students Attend Regional Competition

All four of our schools were represented at the STLP Regional Showcase Competition on  November 18th at NKU.  Each group of students had to present their showcase to two judges.  Three of our four schools are moving on to the State Competition in March.  Congratulations STLP!

Newport Intermediate hosted a Give Back Cincinnati event on Saturday, November 8th. Local professionals, the Boys & Girls Club, Faces without Places, and NIS students created HOPE boxes for kids at NIS who need additional encouragement. These boxes will remind students of how important and special they are to the success of our school.

Newport slammed Gallatin County on a 45-6 win in the opening round of the Class 2A playoffs.  This was the first playoff victory for our Wildcats since 2006.   Newport Wildcats play Walton-Verona on Friday, November 14th at 7:00 in Walton, KY.  Go Wildcats!

Middle School Student gets a Big Catch!


Saavier Craig, 8th grade student at the Middle School and a member of the Newport Fishing Club, struck it big! 

The club was fishing in chilly weather at the Alexandria Reservoir on October 30th, when Saavier caught a catfish over 12 inches in length!

Effectively immediately: 21st Century after-school programming is requiring all parents/guardians and parent- approved individuals to present a photo I.D. when picking up your child.  This is district and school policy and imperative to your child's safety.   

Intermediate Students Visit NKU Fine Arts

NIS Student Ambassadors visited NKU to watch college students perform various music ensembles. The Student Ambassador program promotes positive leadership skills and enrichment opportunities for NIS students.

FBLA Newport Family Feast

Newport High School's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), will be hosting their first "Newport Family Feast" dinner on Wednesday, November 12th,  from 5:00PM-7:00PM at the High School cafeteria.  The FBLA members  want to provide a free hot meal for the entire community at least once a month.  

The menu for Wednesday's dinner includes spaghetti, salad, and bread.  Please join us! 

FBLA Students Visit Newport Primary

FBLA students traveled to the Primary school on Friday, October 24th, to share an afternoon with the 2nd grade students.  FBLA members read the book “The Juice Box Bully” and prepared eight different activities for the kids.  More photos of this event are in the Photo Gallery!

The Newport Marching Wildcats will be performing in their last competition this Saturday, November 8th, at Shea Stadium in Norwood.  Performance time is 12:30 PM.  - arrive early for prime parking!

Students Attend Chick Fil A Leadership Academy

Twenty-five Newport High students, participating in the Chick-Fil-A Leadership Academy, attended the kickoff event at Bellevue High School on Thursday, October 16th  and helped pack 45,792 meals that will be given to Brighton Center.  The students were incredibly well behaved and Ms. Dunn was extremely proud of their efforts.

Health Requirements for Students

We are excited about the coming school year. Please remember that Kentucky law requires:

All students need to have an up-to date-physical exam and KY immunization certificate on file at school.
The law requires all students entering 6th grade to have an updated physical and immunization certificate on file at school.
In addition, the law requires pre-school and kindergarten students to have a vision exam on file no later than January 1st of the school year.
Kindergarteners must also have a dental exam on file by January 1st of the school year.
