Newport Hall of Fame Nominations

The Newport High School Athletic Hall of Fame is dedicated to recognizing and honoring those individuals who have made significant contributions to Newport High School Athletics as athletes, coaches, teams, and through distinguished service.  In 2014, the Newport High School Athletic Hall of Fame recognized 32 individuals in its inaugural class.  This group was already inducted into the Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.

The Health Department plays a unique role in the community in preventing childhood lead poisoning, and in responding to it when it does happen.The Health Department’s county health centers provide free or low-cost lead screening for children 6 and under.

Outdoor Adventure Club

One Saturday a month, the Outdoor Adventure Club travels to a variety of recreational places to experience activities including hiking, biking, kayaking, climbing, fishing, ice-skating and skiing.  Our next trip will be biking on the Loveland Bike Trail on Saturday, October 17th.

Hoxworth Blood Drive at NHS

Twice a year, the NHS has an in-house blood drive.  If students give 4 times during their high school career they will receive a cord to wear at graduation and they have opportunities for scholarships through Hoxworth.  A win-win program!

Football Game Date Change

The Holy Cross football game for next week has been changed to Thursday, October 15 at Newport at 7:00 p.m. - instead of being played at Holmes Friday 10/16.

Star Spangled Banner

All students from the Primary and Intermediate Schools, along with the Middle and High School Chorus students, performed the Star Spangled Banner at the World Peace Bell on Monday, September 14, 2015.  There was a brief ceremony celebrating the 201st anniversary of the writing of the Star Spangled Banner, followed by the students singing.

High Attendance Day!

Please make an extra effort to encourage students to be present on Thursday.  The Kentucky Directors of Pupil Personnel have designated Thursday, September 24th as statewide “High Attendance Day” to emphasize that consistent attendance is essential for success in school.

Beginning with the 2015-2016 school year all Newport children ages 3 to third grade will have an exciting opportunity to jumpstart their literacy skills.  Footsteps2Brilliance is a mobile literacy technology that can be accessed using any smart phone, tablet, iPad or computer. Footsteps2Brilliance puts over 1,000 eBooks, songs, and learning activities in the hands of every parent, early childhood providers, and support agency located within the boundary of the Newport Independent School District. Your child will laugh and learn as the stories come to life with animation and music.  Available in English and Spanish, the eBooks and games are a proven flexible bilingual program and ideally suited to meet the needs of English Language Learner (ELL) and students with special needs.

Gateway Summer Camps Explore High-tech Careers

Gateway Community and Technical will host two hands-on career exploration camps this July for high school girls and middle school students.  “The camps are part of our ongoing efforts to expose students to exciting careers in advanced manufacturing,” said Carissa Schutzman, Gateway Dean of Workforce Solutions.  This camp takes place July 20-22 at Gateway Community and Technical College’s Boone Campus. Vescio Sports Fields estimated the cost of repairs to the field to be around $415,723.05.  The repairs should be completed by July 10th - just in time for  football season.

Grant Gives Career-focused Education to Teens

Cincinnati is one of 13 communities to receive an $80,000 grant from Taco Bell Foundation for Teens to implement career-focused education among area schools.  On April 28, 20 business volunteers delivered the program to more than 200 sophomore and junior students at Newport High School.  To read more about this program, Click Here.

Bengals Player Visited the Intermediate School

Darquez Dennard, visits during the K-PREP pep-rally.  Teachers and students also performed during the rally.  All students were excited to see so many community members cheer them on to success.

The Duke University Talent Identification Program 35th 7th Grade Talent Search is underway. Twenty-one students from Newport High competed at the FBLA Region 4 Competition on March 10th. Six students have advanced to compete in the State Competition on April 20 - 22. Ethan Snapp is also the new Region 4 Parliamentarian. It is a wonderful position to hold and a huge accomplishment!

4-H Visits Newport Intermediate

In collaboration with 4H, NIS presented the Dollars & Sense Program.  Through this 4H program, students learn how to be financially responsible by utilizing money management and saving techniques.

New Marquee Coming to Newport High School

Two members of the High School Boosters Association, Tom and Lori Murray, came to the January 28th Board meeting to present the board with a check for $7,500.  This money will be used to help build a new electronic marquee to replace the old one in front of the high school.  Click here to see more River City News about the January board meeting.

Hoeh and Combs to compete at State Singles Bowling Tournament

Congratulations to 8th Grader Mirena Combs, who finished in 4th place and Senior Katlyn Hoeh, who finished in 3rd place at the Regional Singles Bowling Tournament.  Mirena and Katlyn will compete at the State Singles Bowling Tournament in Lexington on February 12, 2015.  Click here to read more about Mirena, Katlyn, and the tournament.


Athletics Open Forum

There will be a "Town Hall" open forum meeting, in accordance with the Athletic Department's Title IX audit, on Thursday, February 12th from 3:00 - 3:30 in the Newport High School library.  All parents, community members, and staff are encouraged to attend and participate in the question and answer session.  The session will be conducted by KHSAA Title IX auditor, Gary Lawson, and NHS Athletic Director, Matt Schmitz.

NHS FBLA Students become Big Brothers & Big Sisters

FBLA has partnered with the Intermediate School to jump start a Big Brother Big Sister program. They will be meeting once a month and altering activities each month. For January, they shared some pizza, got to know each other, and went outside for a kickball and basketball game!  Next month, they will be focusing on reading and homework.

Outdoor Adventure Club Going on a North Slope Trip

The Outdoor Adventure Club will be skiing and snowboarding at Perfect North Slopes this Saturday, February 7th. Winter Game Changer Night a Success at NIS

The Winter Game Changer night was a huge success with over 170 students and parents attending! Grace Fellowship Church provided dinner and wonderful volunteers to serve the food! We are truly thankful for everyone's attendance and all the support we receive from the community.

State Dual Championship - Wrestling

The Varsity Wrestling team placed 2nd in the District to qualify for the Small School State Duals Championship.  Only 12 schools across the state qualify for this tournament.  This is the first time Newport Wrestling has ever qualified for the State Duals Championship.  The State Duals Championship will be held at Union County High School on January 31, 2015.  Go Wildcats!

This organization provides educational services to children experiencing homelessness. NIS is "Raising the Bar" on service learning!

Middle School Student gets a Big Catch!


Saavier Craig, 8th grade student at the Middle School and a member of the Newport Fishing Club, struck it big! 

The club was fishing in chilly weather at the Alexandria Reservoir on October 30th, when Saavier caught a catfish over 12 inches in length!

NIS Student Ambassadors visited NKU to watch college students perform various music ensembles. The Student Ambassador program promotes positive leadership skills and enrichment opportunities for NIS students.

Newport High School's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), will be hosting their first "Newport Family Feast" dinner on Wednesday, November 12th,  from 5:00PM-7:00PM at the High School cafeteria.  The FBLA members  want to provide a free hot meal for the entire community at least once a month.

The Newport Marching Wildcats will be performing in their last competition this Saturday, November 8th, at Shea Stadium in Norwood.  Performance time is 12:30 PM.  - arrive early for prime parking!

Newport Primary teachers are donating items to create a Harvest Reading area for the students.  Once completed, this will be a fun area for students to sit and enjoy some Fall reading!  School counselor, Tracey Alexander, donated the items shown.

Students Attend Chick Fil A Leadership Academy

Twenty-five Newport High students, participating in the Chick-Fil-A Leadership Academy, attended the kickoff event at Bellevue High School on Thursday, October 16th  and helped pack 45,792 meals that will be given to Brighton Center.  The students were incredibly well behaved and Ms. Dunn was extremely proud of their efforts.
