Welcome to the 17-18 school year! What an amazing year we are going to have! My name is Joshua Snapp. I have been with the Newport Independent School District for 6 years. Before coming to Newport I taught various levels of Math for 10 years at Covington’s Holmes High School. My educational background includes an Associates of Science, Bachelors of Mathematics Education, Masters of Arts in Curriculum and Instructional Design and Masters of Education in Instructional Leadership. During my time with Newport Independent Schools I have had the opportunity to serve as both Assistant Principal and Principal at Newport Primary for 5 years and am now, in my 2nd year, serving as the principal of Newport Intermediate.
What’s been going on:
· We have worked diligently to improve the physical environment of the school by painting the hallways and stairwells. We have started the process to replace carpet with tile and have made our lobby and front office more welcoming for our visitors. These are but a few of the things that have been done to ensure our students have the best possible environment in which to learn.
· We will begin a new reading program this year that will be consistent from K through 6th grade. The consistency will empower our teachers and students to receive the best practices and strategies to ensure a strong reading foundation before moving on to the high school.
· 5th and 6th graders will have options for elective classes. The options range from Drama, Band, Team Sports, Lego Robotics, PLTW, IPAD 101, Sculpturing and Graphic Design just to list a few. Our goal is to allow students to take elective classes in which they are interested. We know natural curiosities and interests will increase their success rate rather than forcing a student to take a class for which he or she may have no interest.
· Our staff has been in trainings while at the same time in classrooms to get ready for the school year. We have never seen such excitement to get the year started!
It certainly has been a busy summer but it is worth it because our students will always come first and their success is important to all of us.
Please remember it will take all of us working together to create success so we all (students, staff, administration and parents) need to make sure we are doing our part to reach our goal.
I do have an open door policy. If ever there are questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me or see me. We can work together through discussion to find solutions for any issue that may arise.
